Heat therapy is one of the oldest and most effective ways to relax, detox and reset. At Fabulas Spa in Nanyuki we offer both a dry sauna and an aromatic steam bath — and guests often ask which one they should choose. The short answer? Both are wonderful. But they work differently, so here's how to decide.

The sauna: dry heat

A sauna uses dry heat at a higher temperature. It raises your core temperature, makes you sweat deeply, and is prized for detoxification, improved circulation and muscle recovery. If you've had an intense workout, feel the cold easily, or want that deep, purifying sweat, the sauna is for you.

The steam bath: moist heat

A steam bath (or steam room) uses moist, humid heat at a lower temperature, often infused with eucalyptus. It's gentler on the airways, wonderfully hydrating for the skin, and especially soothing if you're congested or have sensitive skin. It's also the perfect way to soften the skin before a body scrub or facial.

Sauna vs steam bath: quick comparison

  • Heat type: sauna = dry & hotter · steam = moist & gentler
  • Best for: sauna = detox, recovery, circulation · steam = skin hydration, breathing, relaxation
  • Skin: steam is more hydrating; sauna is more purifying

Why not both?

Our favourite ritual is to alternate — a session in the sauna, a cool-down, then the steam bath — followed by a massage while your muscles are warm and receptive. It's the ultimate reset. Always hydrate before and after, and listen to your body.
